Barnett and Cormier Talk Catch Wrestling

It’s nice to hear them talk about some Catch Wrestling history and lineage. I do think it’s important to clarify Catch Wrestling is NOT Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a Wrestling base. That is an inaccurate description and I really want people who haven’t tried it to understand Catch Wrestling is it’s own complete and distinct style of grappling. KJ Gould of Catch Wrestling United recently posted what I believe to be a much more accurate description. KJ writes;

“Although Catch arguably has never been a pure style. It’s taken best parts of Irish Collar & Elbow, Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling etc. It evolved when it went to USA, and when it went to Japan. I think as long as the core basics remain in tact, the starting positions, the ethos and sport rules, branching out from this with experimentation is great as long as it doesn’t undermine this core.”

Josh Barnett really quickly went through how Catch Wrestling was passed down to him. He mentions 3 primary teachers Matt Hume, Erik, Paulson and Billy Robinson. In case you didn’t catch it all I laid out the linage of each of his teachers below. What I want people to understand is that Catch Wrestling has been legitimately passed on and is still very much alive!

Scientific Wrestling Training Camp April 2012

Here’s a cool video from the last Catch Wrestling camp I attended with Billy Robinson. There are several really awesome Catch Wrestling techniques demonstrated here. If you’re interested in learning real authentic Catch Wrestling I am an assistant Coach with Billy Robinson and Scientific Wrestling contact me here to set up a free introductory private lesson with me in Catch Wrestling.

How is Catch Wrestling Different from Other Styles of Grappling?

I just finished the final Catch Wrestling Camp of the year will Billy Robinson this past Saturday and Sunday. Similar to every camp, I was given a vast amount of new material to work on along with a lot of corrections to make in my wrestling.

I am often asked about what some of the common differences between Catch Wrestling and other Grappling styles are. Can you describe how some of the techniques are different from what you would learn in Judo, in Amateur Wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Having a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and having wrestled in High School here is my list of 9 very unique grappling aspects found in Catch Wrestling. Keep in mind I could list many more and if you’d like feel free to leave comments and we can discuss them.
